ABOUT

Annika Weertz (*1991) works as a freelance photographer in Hanover.
After studying history, journalism and technical editing, her curiosity for images led her to photography. As an autodidact, she tells universal stories in private details in documentary essays, with the portrait taking centre stage. Photography is the tool that guides her through the complexities of life, emotions and relationships. An essential part of her work is her own vulnerability and the attempt not to explain the world, but to make it tangible.

Her assignments reach from portrait work for magazines, cultural institutions and artists to composed still lifes of design objects and selected advertising work. She is a member of Female Photo Club, Fotobus Society & VG Bild-Kunst.

Annika also films occasionally and in her free time, she enjoys listening to music and watching auteur and horror cinema.

Look At Me Now!

Description

Look At Me Now! is not a documentary series in the sense of an observation from the outside, but an attempt at an ongoing collective portrait. Growing up is a constant peeling out of certain stages of life and images that one has made of oneself.  Especially at the beginning, this happens incredibly quickly. And yet every time there is the justified claim: Look! Now I am who I really am! In my photo series, I try to capture these moments of self-assertion, what is otherwise often dismissed as just a phase.

Through Milan, the son of a friend, I got access to his circle of friends, who fascinated me more and more after a first photographic acquaintance and whom I consequently wanted to portray in regular intervals. For a year now, a kind of continuous photographic diary has been created in which my view of them meets their view of themselves. The more time we spent together, the more their biographies unfolded, the portraits widened their space: relationships, migration experiences, friendship, future, parents, identity. Away from grand narratives of crisis, remote landscapes and foreign cultures, I wanted to capture this unbelievably condensed time of growing up, to share in their view of themselves, to look back with them on past images and develop new ones. And above all: to take them seriously in their self-expression and offer them the opportunity to create an image of themselves together with me that corresponds to their own ideal at this specific moment, beyond parental or social expectations.

Description

Music photography and the documentation of bands go hand in hand with a certain style and certain subjects that, to this day, have been reproduced a thousand times: pre-gig rituals and band huddles, sweaty faces right after the show, backstage drinks, little jokes in-between shows, live footage. These photographs are rarely ever art since they mainly serve the purpose of promoting a particular band image and therefore only allow intimate moments in a set frame.

The essence Annika Weertz is trying to find in her photographs exceeds the authentic portrayal of a band. It is the genuine perception of connections. In what ways does the social atmosphere manifest itself among the band members, what are their relationships with each other like and what type of connection do they have with the photographer? By putting together numerous images, Weertz tries to create a mosaic of interpersonal relationships, which obviously and ultimately remains unfinished. It is an artistic attempt that also reveals its own perspective, as the artist’s personality and presence contribute a vital part to the documentary and have a significant influence on the outcome of the project. Annika Weertz comes closer to a truth that lies beyond objective documentation and unfolds a tension of its very own for the viewer.

Teenagers’ Clothes

A contemporary fashion portrait

DescriptionThe fashion industry is still obsessed with youth. We are used to look at adolescent bodies wearing designer clothes that were put on them by adult stylists and fashion editors. As a portrait photographer, I was interested to know what teens are wearing 2022 when they dress themselves and their thought process behind it. How do they pose and express themselves? What are their favourite pieces and what role does fashion play in their everyday life.

Our portrait takes place in Gießen, Germany. A small student town near Frankfurt. I had lived there for nine years and while I was visiting my friends, I came home very late one summer night to find out that my friend’s son, Milan, was still awake watching JW Anderson’s fashion show. I asked about his friends and if they were also interested in fashion like he was. It did not take long to gather this group of friends together.

After having several flash backs to my own youth in the early 2000s, I noticed how they are way better at styling and putting a look together and they really do know what they are doing.

Adam Peleg

Description

Adam Peleg is known as the former leadsinger of the Danish psychedelic surf Band Pacific Swell, with which he has toured Germany twice already and other parts of Europe such as Spain & The Netherlands.

With his solo project, he takes the stage as a modern crooner but draws a fine line between theatricism and vulnerability. Inspired by the productions of a bygone era, he dives deep into his very own world as a singer songwriter. An unintrusive yet sometimes haunting guitar lures us in and we find ourselves in his melancholic dreams in which his deep voice tells poetic stories of love.

In collaboration with Adam, I have shot several portraits for promotion purposes, shot and designed his album and various covers and produced the music video for his debut single “Guess The Music Ain’t For You” and filmed a life session for his second single “Rusty Rifle”.
